High-Visibility Safety Apparel standard has been improved for 2020

The American National Standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel (ANSI/ISEA 107) has been updated for 2020.

Companies wishing to represent their products as compliant will be a need to certify and/or recertify background materials, reflective tape, and garments to the 2020 standard.

Improvements in the 2020 standard

  • There is a new provision for single-use non-woven HV disposable coveralls. HVSA protection is now available for, e.g., chem spill workers busy on roads.
  • The concept of overall luminance has been introduced for HVSA garments, as well as an expanded clarity for 360° visibility.
  • Minimum requirement of Bursting Strength of Knitted Materials has changed from 60 pounds force (lbf) to 40 lbf, which brings HVSA strength standards in line with other forms of PPE.
  • There’s been a dimensional change for AATCC 135, AATCC 96, and AATCC 158. Woven minimum width direction requirements have changed (from ±2% to ±4%). This enables greater sourcing flexibility for manufacturers using woven fabrics.
  • To maintain the essential aspect of this life saving standard, the category of “Accessories” has been removed from ANSI/ISEA 107-2020.

The new Overall Conspicuity Test

The ASTM E1501 option illustrates the 360° retroreflective performance of the garment:

  • Garment is rotated in 15° increments around a vertical axis
  • 24 readings are taken at each of 4 observation angles
  • RR is calculated to describe the total amount of light returned by the garment

Sensitivity

Trim designed for very low reflectivity (to simulate post-wear performance) and standard trim both produced detailed, repeatable data.

Enhances supply chain transparency and supports marketing special garment claims

  • Provides information to the purchaser that the HVSA were manufactured, sampled, tested, and inspected in accordance with the conformity assessment system outlined in ANSI ISEA 125-2014 Level 1.
  • The issuer of the declaration of conformity shall have procedures in place to re-evaluate the validity of the declaration, in the event of changes significantly affecting the design or product specification
    • changes in the standard to which product conformity is evaluated against;
    • changes in the ownership or structure of the supplier;
    • updated information that suggests the product may no longer conform to the specified requirements.
